NOTE

This drawing can be compared to the Allegory of the Fine Arts by Dandré-Bardon in the Louvre. They are of similar size and technique and both are signed and dated 1740. The Louvre drawing shows the artist himself as an angel on the clouds, surrounded by allegorical figures, with his coat-of-arms below and an inscription which should resonate with all artists: La Fortune n'est point l'objet de ses désirs / c'est au sein des Beaux-Arts qu'il trouve son plaisir (see Daniel Chol, Michel François Dandré Bardon ..., Aix en Provence 1987, page 101, no. 106, reproduced).

Dandré-Bardon was described by Mariette as "génie bouillant et plein de fougue", and this drawing exhibits those characteristics of his style.
