In the twenty years that he lived and worked in Paris, he was influenced by the innovations in colour and composition by artists such as Manet and Matisse. However, Economou had his own personal style, concentrating on delicate atmospheres wrapping around sturdy weathered buildings and fishing boats. Economou builds the focal structures in the paintings with a palette of earth tones, then wraps rich colour fields around them. As Kouris writes: "...the blending of colours and contours lends the painting a hazy ethereal quality. Within Economou's often almost monochromatic compositions, colour, as a vehicle to convey feelings and create atmosphere, took supremacy." The surfaces of his paintings are textured, yet the glowing colour fields rise through the brushwork. Whether he is painting in France or Greece, Economou captures a peaceful, timeless quality in his work.
