signed on the obverse, Maxime David, gold and silver frame with paste border, the reverse with mother-of-pearl

Maxime David was the pupil of Mme de Mirbel. He won many medals at the Salon between 1834 and 1868, where he exhibited miniatures of several eminent personages.
