Provenance

Modernist dance study of important dancer. Legendary Chicago dancer and choreographer Ruth Page, who was born in 1900, was a radical in the conservative world of ballet, outraging some, while inspiring others. She was the first female dancer at the Metropolitan Opera. She was the first to present Rudolf Nureyev on an American stage and the first to commission work from George Ballanchine and Aaron Copland. In Chicago, Ruth Page was the beloved dance maker for the Ravinia Festival and the Lyric Opera. She was the creator of a Nutcracker that ran every Christmas for more than 20 years and the founder of a school of dance that still flourishes today. Maurice Seymour was the preeminent celebrity photography studio in Chicago and New York during the 1920sÐ1940s. There were actually two brothers: one ran the Chicago studio and the other operated the New York site. They used large format cameras and studio lighting, photographed the famous, and became the preferred photographers of ballet dancers.
