Description

Maurice Dainville (1856-1943) French Impressionist Oil on Canvas, mounted to board. "Sanary-sur-Mer". A view of a beach and swimmers at Sanary-sur-Mer, Var, Cote azur, France. In ornate gilt wood frame. Board 12 1/4"x10 3/4". In frame 18"x16 1/2". Weight 5 pds 6 oz. PROVENANCE: Purchased in 1985 at Vente Champin-Lombrail-Gautier in Enghein-les-Bains, a Paris suburb, from a private collection. Maurice Louis Dainville was born in Paris on April 24, 1856. A pupil of Gustave Boulanger, Jules Lefebvre and Luc-Olivier Merson, he became friends with the painter François de Montholon. Brilliant draftsman and watercolorist, Dainville saw his works admitted to the Salon from 1880, until 1929. His life is shared between Paris, the countryside and the sea, with a long stay in Concarneau in 1890, then again between 1900-1910. He was the director of the Regional School of Fine Arts of Angers and architect of the department of Maine-et-Loire. Active in Paris, he also travels throughout France and comes to the Boulonnais with his friend Francois de Montholon (Cape Gris-Nez, Wissant, Etaples, Berck in 1886), then the Somme (1890s). He discovered the Mediterranean before the First World War. Dainville had a successful career of more than 50 years, with numerous distinctions and awards: in Paris, Honorable Mention (1895) then Medal of 3rd class (1896) at the Salon, regular exhibitor at the Salon d Winter, founding member and exhibitor at the Salon des Amants de la Nature. He also sent his works to the fine arts exhibitions of Province in Chaumont, Angers, Amiens, Moulins. The works of Maurice Dainville are well represented at the Museum of Angers, Autun, Vernon, Etampes, Toulon, Nimes, Calais, in Paris, Louvre Museum, Carnavalet Museum and the Cour des Comptes.
