Item Overview

Description

Painting on silk, Kakemono. Japan, 18th / early 19 th century. HANGING SCROLL 187 x 45 CM, SIZE IMAGE 98 x 41 CM
A very sensitive lyrically composed silk painting accurately executed and depicting a quail (Uzura) and two blades of reed-grass (Ashi). The delicate brushwork invites us to sense water and landscape. Some masterly and light brush strokes create very naturalistic reeds in the foreground. Signed GOSHUN, red seal "Goshun no in" to the lower right. Hanging scroll with fine brocade mounting offering golden threads and appealing floral motifs. On the wooden box are artist name and title displayed in Sino-Japanese characters - "Matsumura Goshun Ashi (to) Uzura". The artist was born in Kyoto. One of his masters was Buson. Goshun was the founder of the Shijo-School that had a remakable influence on the painting in Kyoto of the Edo Period.
