Description

Attributed to Sturtevant Hamblin (Active 1825-1856). Portrait of Miss Mary Caroline Haines, oil on board within period grain painted frame. Waist length depiction, she is wearing a blue puffy sleeve dress with coral necklace, the ends tied in a bow, in her hand she holds an apple. Inscribed on reverse Mary Caroline Haines Jackson with later genealogical family record. Mary Caroline Haines was born to William Haines and Caroline Eaton on December 2nd, 1839 in Cabot, Vermont. William Haines was born December 26th, 1807 in Cabot, Vermont. He and his second wife Caroline Eaton (b. November 14th, 1816) were married September 19th, 1836. They had two children, Mary Caroline (b.1839) and son Ezra W. (b.1843). Williams occupation is listed as that of a farmer in the 1850 Caledonia County, Vermont census. In the census of 1860, added to the household was Almon Jackson, whom Mary Caroline would later marry on May 31st, 1861. Mary Caroline and Almon would later have six children. H: 14 in., W: 10 in. Property may be picked up directly at our gallery, appointments are required. After 14 days, unless other arrangements have been made, a storage fee of $10/week per lot will be charged. The auction house reserves the right to sell unclaimed property to recoup storage fees once the accrued fees are greater than the purchase price of the item or 6 months from the date of sale, whichever comes first.

Bidders are encouraged to register prior to the day of sale, as automatic bidder approval is not guaranteed.

PREVIEW: Preview is available by appointment the week of Saturday, June 12th through Friday, June 18th, 2021. Appointments may be scheduled on our website or by calling us at (603) 953-0022.

It is the purchaser's responsibility to inspect each lot as to condition, size, authenticity and rarity to determine his or her own level of interest. Neither the auctioneer, nor the auction house shall be responsible for the accuracy of any printed or verbal descriptions. All weights and measurements are approximate. The auctioneer has the sole right to re-offer a lot and/or settle any disputed bids. The record of sale kept by the auction house shall be final in the event of any dispute. At the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, the bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer, whether in person or absentee, assumes the obligation to pay for the offered lot, and shall pay full purchase price for the lot, which shall include hammer price, plus the buyer's premium and all applicable charges and/or costs. Payment is expected within 5 days of the auction date; interest charges will apply to invoices after the expiration of this period. For payments made by check, merchandise will not be released until 10 days after payment is received when the check clears.

The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid. Some lots may carry reserves or minimum selling prices below which a lot will not be sold. The amount of the reserve shall not exceed the low estimate or requested opening bid. Estimates and opening bids are subject to change at any time prior to the offering of each lot. The auction house shall not be held responsible for any errors or failures in the execution of absentee bids or bids executed online. In all instances the auctioneer's interpretation of these conditions is final and binding on all bidders.

Photographs are the property of auction house and may not be used without explicit written consent.

Credit Cards

Bidder cards may automatically be charged after 5 days if payment arrangements have not been made.

Payment

Payment shall be made by cash, good check, credit/debit card, money order or wire transfer and is due at the end of each sale. Payment is expected within 5 days of the auction date, interest charges will apply to invoices after the expiration of this period. For payments made by check, merchandise will not be released until 10 days after payment is received when the check clears. A $35 fee will be charged for all returned checks. An addition 3% will be added for all credit card transactions.
