Item Overview

Description

MARY BLOOD MELLEN GLOUCESTER SEASCAPE OIL PAINTING with James Craig Coa examined by James A. Craig of Gloucester Massachusetts. Between the years of 2003 & 2006, James Craig examined, documented and worked with several authentic Mary Mellen & Fitz Lane Paintings as he was the Associate Collector of Permanent Collections at the Cape Ann Museum. He is also the author of the book, Fitz H. Lane: An Artist’s Voyage through Nineteenth Century America. It is in James Craig’s expert opinion that the painting we are listing tonight, is an original, unsigned oil painting, executed in the hand of Mary Blood Mellen (1819-1886.)

This painting was consigned to Skinner's auction in 2008 with a high reserve and NO COA, which was not met.

Measuring 10” by 14 ¼”, this authentic Mary Mellen Oil Painting depicts a fisherman, standing in a rowboat, in a Gloucester Harbor Seascape. If you research other documented paintings by Mary Mellen you will see similarities in the rock formation in the foreground, the construction of the rowboat and the treatment of the water. Also, Mellen was known for the heavy application of yellow-ochre pigment in the composition of the sky and has even painted the man standing in the rowboat in other paintings. According to the Skinner's report, this painting has been trimmed down from a larger composition and it was properly re-lined. We have checked under a black-light and guarantee that there are no in-painted restorations.

We have checked under a black-light and guarantee that there are no in-painted restorations.
