28" x 40", c. 1925, titled and inscribed en verso, signed lower right. Lovely period carved and patinated exhibition frame, together with a 16" operational painting lamp. Reference:Who Was Who in American Art; Sparks, Biographical Dictionary of Painters & Sculptors in Illinois: 1808-1945; Falk, Annual Exhibition Record of AIC, 1888-1950. Exhibited:Art Institute of Chicago, 1923-43. Collections:Illinois State Museum. Provenance:Private Collection: Kenosha, Wisconsin. Purchased in 1925 from Anderson Art Co., Chicago Fine Art Dealers, The Congress Hotel. Note:Smith travelled widely across Europe and the United States, including the Gulf states. Many of his painting submissions to AIC exhibitions were scenes of old New Orleans similar to this one.
