Notes

Inspired by the horrors as a result of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima 1945. See also under Giacometti for the collaboration Giacometti/Jutte. Jacob Jutte is a one-off. In 1967 a zebra crossing spontaneously appeared on the busy Wittenburgergracht. Wim Noordhoek recalls: "every night after the municipal officials washed away the zebra with water, we painted it again" (Avondblog). The idea came from "the bizarre sculptor Jacob Jutte and Kees Hoekert". The website buiteninbeeld.nl is one of the few sources that devotes more than a single word to this completely idiosyncratic artist who certainly deserves his own chapter in the art history of the 20th century. That is why - and because it is fun - we fully quote this short overview of his achievements: "Jacques Jutte alias Jacob Jutte (1930) doorliep de Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam van 1959-1962.
