Item Overview

Description

MARK FERNAND SEVERIN (1906-1987)
London Underground/Why Go Home?
After luring Underground riders into and out of London with destination posters, the organization took a new approach: urging riders to extend their day in town, Here, Severin shows the clock embedded in the Underground logo at 5:30 PM below a convivial restaurant scene with couples, friends and colleagues stopping to gather before their return home. In fact, scenes filled with crowds and good humor were a Severin specialty. Born in Brussels, the son of a poet, Severin studied philosophy and letters, then art and archeology at Ghent University. He lived in England from 1932 to 1940, then again from 1945 to 1949, working as art director of R. C. Casson advertising agency, then as a freelance artist, advertising designer and book illustrator. It was at this time that he also met and married Nina Holme, daughter of The Studio editor, Geoffry Holme. A successful graphic artist, he also taught at the Institut Supérior des Beaux Arts, Antwerp, and the Institut des Hautes Etudes Typographiques Plantin.
