Notes

Marius Joseph Sain was born in Avignon in 1877. He studied under the sculptors Injalbert, Thomas and Feliz Charpentier, and debuted at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in 1903. His work can be found in the collections of the musée d'Avignon and the musée du Petit Palais in Paris.

These two bronzes are testament to Sain's concern for ethnographic accuracy. The distinctive costumes of the figures are enhanced by the attractive contrasts both in patina and in textured surface.
