Notes

Lantern Light and the similar but smaller painting Polishing Pans and the heartbreakingly sentimental A Parting (both Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool), represent the best of Marianne Stokes' early career. It has been suggested that Lantern Light may depict a young boy drying glasses at the St Ives Arts Club. It has been noted that; 'Refraining from choosing subjects of heavy or unkind manual labour she observes children diligently applying themselves to a task in hand.' (Magdalern Evans, Utmost Fidelity, 2009, p.44)
