In her work, Mariana Castillo Deball reflects on the cultural and, sometimes, political implications of different methods of recording and classifying information. She records her research by means of photographs, drawings and sound recordings and sometimes adds subjective elements to the original archival material. The artist is fascinated by the mechanisms we use to organise our lives, but more than that, she is fascinated by the margins of such structures where leakages inevitably occur. She sees these leakages as positive because they disrupt certain ordering systems, and foreground what lies behind. Her work was shown in several solo- and group exhibitions, amongst which Do ut des, Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp (2008); A for Alibi, de Appel arts centre, Amsterdam (2007); Manifesta 7, Trentino Alto Adige (2008), Just in Time, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2006), These Ruins you see, Museum of contemporary Art Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, Mexico (2006) and Archivo estocástico, Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros, Mexico City (2002). She has won the Prix the Rome in 2004.
