Notes

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION

Margherita Caffí, an artist from Vicenza known for her paintings of flowers, was patronized by the Medici in Florence and the Habsburgs in Madrid and Innsbruck; she seems to have lived in Innsbruck for a significant period of time. Her loose handling of paint and free technique is more rococo than baroque, yet her color scheme - which favors red, yellow, and blue - and the use of a dark background identify her as a seventeenth-century artist.
