MARGARET DE COURCY LEWTHWAITE DEWAR (1878-1959) Split, Dalmatia (Croatia-formerly Yugoslavia) watercolour, signed and dated August 1937 36cm x 41.5cm Note : Attended Glasgow School of Art from 1892-1900 where she was successful in annual national and local competitions, and afterwards the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London. She was awarded the School's Diploma in 1914. Between 1902 and 1908 she was instructor in enamels (GSA) and again from 1912 until the 1920s. She had her own studio at 93 Hope Street where she worked from 1900 until 1926. She painted a panel for the Forestry Hall, Wembley. Throughout her life she travelled extensively which influenced her work. She was a member of the Scottish Guild of Handicraft, exhibited widely, at the Glasgow International Exhibition 1901, the Royal Scottish Academy, at Cork, Turin and St Louis. In 1905 she became a member of the Lady Artists' Club and gained the Lauder Award in 1936. She remained a stalwart member throughout her life and was President from 1934 until 1937 and again from 1952 to 1955. She died in Glasgow. Her work is included in the "Glasgow Girls" exhibition at Kirkcudbright until 30th August.
