Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly the Atlantic non-stop doing so in single engine plane, the Spirit of St Louis. He took 5 sandwiches for the flight famously saying "If I get to Paris I won't need any more and if I don't get to Paris, I won't need any more either". He took off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island on May 20th 1927 and arrived 33 hours later at Le Bourget Field, Paris. He was met by thousands and was hosted in Paris by the American Ambassador Myron T Herrick. The artist, Margaret Cox Herrick , was a Californian portrait painter. The painting, dated the same year as Lindbergh's historic flight may have been specifically commissioned.
