Notes

This drawing, which bears a traditional attribution to Marco Pino, seems to be a preparatory study with differences for his painting in the apse of the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Naples (fig. 1).υ1 The final composition includes many other scenes besides the baptism represented in this drawing. Such complex compositions seem to be a main characteristic of Marco Pino's late work. The painting is not documented but is now believed to date between 1566 and 1569. Northern landscapes such as the one in the background of the present drawing do appear in Marco Pino's paintings and the use of blue wash, which is very striking, may also have been inspired by Northern art. 1.
