Mukul Dey was a student of Rabindranath Tagore and a pioneer of the Pan-Asian movement that Tagore supported at the initiative of Japanese scholar, Okakura. Dey studied with Okarura's students in Tokyo, and they in turn studied with him at Santiniketan. Mukul mastered Japanese print-making and applied it to Indian subject matter.
