Item Overview

Description

MALY Vaclav (19. 2. 1874 Prague - 9. 10. 1935 Prague) Digging up potatoes Oil on cardboard, 25 x 30 cm, framed, undated, signed lower right. Czech painter, he studied under V. Brozik and H. Schwaiger at the Academy of Arts in Prague. Initially he painted motifs from Prague, his friendship with the writer J. S. Baar brought him to the Chodsko region where he concentrated on folk themes and his work at that time was acknowledged by French and Viennese art critics. His ethnographical and social subjects reflect the influence of French naturalist painters; later on he turned to Impressionism and aimed at capturing the light and mood. See T 2/70, NECVU 2/1008.
