Ce superbe coffre en marqueterie de nacre, écaille, corne teintée et ébène à décor géométrique est caractéristique des productions de l'Empire Ottoman du XVIIe siècle. Il fut remonté en boîte à jeux par la Maison Giroux, et témoigne du luxe et du raffinement que cette fabrique pouvait apporter à chacune de ses créations. Il se compose de trois tiroirs divisés en de nombreux compartiments aux dimensions variables plaqués de bois clair. Cette grande maison d'ébénisterie fut créée en 1799 à Paris par François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux qui laissa à sa mort l'entreprise à son fils. Outre cette activité, il était également un grand marchand d'objets de curiosité, de peintures, de dessins et de gravures. A la fin des années 1830, il est répertorié comme ébéniste au sein de l'Almanach du Commerce et fut connu pour posséder son propre atelier. Il est très probable que notre coffret fut réalisé durant cette période. Louis XVIII et Charles X firent partie de sa clientèle, notamment pour offrir des présents au jeune Duc de Bordeaux ou à la Princesse Louise. Ainsi, en 1828, Charles X fit l'acquisition d'une grande boîte à jeux dite « à jeu de bagues » à décor de satiné centré d'une couronne royale et de la lettre H ainsi qu'une jardinière pour une somme colossale. Lors de l'Exposition Universelle de 1834, le talent de Giroux fut récompensé par une médaille d'argent. Sous Napoléon III et l'Impératrice Eugénie, la Maison Giroux avait acquis une immense réputation dans le domaine du luxe. Disposant d'une clientèle internationale, Giroux semble avoir voulu rendre hommage avec ce coffret aux splendeurs de l'Empire Turc en utilisant ce type de matériaux précieux, agencés avec la plus grande virtuosité.

The sale will be conducted in Euros (e).
Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to e 500 000:
25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to e 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted. Exhibitions prior to the sale at Marc-Arthur Kohn or on the sale point permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale, and therefore no claims will be accepted after the fall of the hammer. BIDS
Biddings will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue or as announced by the auctioneer, and will be in increments determined by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser. Should the auctioneer recognize two simultaneous bids on
an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the sale room may participate in this second opportunity to bid.
