Item Overview

Description

Frank M. Gregory (1848--?) original etching, "MADISON SQUARE, NEW YORK CITY", 1887. Signed in the plate. Exhibited at the NY Etching Club in 1888, #63. Gregory's work is in the collections of the Library of Congress, the NY Public Library, and others. This is a rare image of a lively street scene around the square at 23rd Street on the east side of Manhattan. Image approx. 6-3/4 x 11-3/4" plus wide clean margins. This etching is from a series of etchings produced by the New York Etching Club in 1887 and published by F. Stokes with text by Ripley Hitchcock. The portfolio/ book was entitled "Representative Etchings By Artists of To-day In America", 1887. It was etched to include Madison square, Fifth Avenue,Broadway and 23rd Street. The accompanying text mentions the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York Club, Delmonicos, Victoria Hotel, W. J. Worth Monument and Brunswick Hotel as well as commentary on the development of the city. It provides great insight into life in NYC during the later part of the 19 century. A strong impression.
