Item Overview

Description

(British, 1893-1975) PORTRAIT OF An unidentified WOMAN photographer's label on verso vintage Vivex color print 137/16 x 105/8 in. (34.2 x 27 cm) circa 1937 PROVENANCE Private Collection, LONDON Private Collection, NEW YORK Madame Yevonde, born Yevonde Cumbers, once stated: "Be original or die." She was best known for her 1935 exhibition, Goddesses and Others, a series of photographs of female aristocrats dressed in mythological costumes. Neo-classical effects can be seen, although much more subtly, in this photograph, taken only one year later, a time when English aristocrats were anxiously hoping to sit for Madame Yevonde. Her use of the Vivex process, similar to the Carbo process, allows the rich and luminous color resolution.
