Notes

In 1900 the Darmstadt-based architect and publisher Alexander Koch and the magazine Zeitschrift für Innendekoration organised a competition for the design of a large country house for an art connoisseur. The designs of the participants were published by Koch in 1902; no first prize was awarded, but though Baillie Scott won the second prize, his scheme was never realised. The colour plates depict interiors and elevations of the Baillie Scott proposal, and the decorative and architectural programmes include a great many of the designer's hallmark motifs.
