NOTE

Andrei Filippov studied in the production department of the Moscow Art Theatre and early-on defined his personal artistic style as monumental, iconic and almost propaganda-like, elements of which can bee seen in the offered lot. An active participant in exhibitions of AptArt, Filippov eventually became one of the leaders of the new generation of the Moscow Conceptualist school. Filippov's interest in ruptured cultures and civilizations and the opposition between West and East is reflected in his art and many of his works can be considered prophetic. The offered lot demonstrates this foresight in the use of two-headed eagles to spell the word West in Cyrillic. This common motif, as characteristic of his work including the saw-like contours of the Kremlin wall (lot 79) was used by Filippov in his paintings and installations long before it was reincorporated as the new Russia's national emblem.
