Note: Already a well trained and accomplished New York City artist, Lyell E. Carr traveled South in 1891 to paint life in the rural community of Tallapoosa, Georgia. From his personal experiences, Carr produced a series of Southern genre paintings that earned favorable reviews and accolades when exhibited in New York. In the engaging painting "Plowing the Cotton Field", an African American woman arduously guides the mule driven plow across the field
