Description

LUCIUS RICHARD O`BRIEN OSA PRCA 1832 - 1899 Cape GaspE watercolour on paper signed, titled and dated 1882 20.5 x 13.5 in 52.1 x 34.3 cm By descent to the present Private Collection, Nova Scotia Anne Newlands, Canadian Art from its Beginnings to 2000, 2000, page 237 This painting depicts the original lighthouse in Cape GaspE, Quebec, built in 1873. Two other structures, the most recent of which still stands today, followed this lighthouse. While the structure itself is only 12.8 metres high, it stands atop a 95-metre cliff. Newlands states: "O'Brien was the pre-eminent painter in Ontario in the 1870s and 1880s, and his work was praised for its 'marked individuality... feeling and genius far above the average.' In 1874, he became vice president of the Ontario Society of Artists, and in 1880, was appointed the first president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts."
