Item Overview

Description

original carved frame. Hartrath studied with Vanderpoel at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Paris and Munich. She exhibited as early as 1898, at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1901, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. She also exhibited at the Hoosier Salon, Paris Salon, and the Chicago Municipal Art League. Hartrath taught at Rockford College from 1902-04. She visited Brown County, Indiana around 1908-1910, and like many Chicago painters, rented a cabin and spent the summers there. She was considered by many to be the most talented woman landscapist from the Chicago area, and the Brown County hills were an excellent source of subject matter for her. Her work is included in the collections of the Governor’s Mansion (Springfield, IL), Municipal Art League (Chicago), Union League Club (Chicago), and in many public buildings in Illinois and Indiana. REF: Art Across America: Two Centuries of Regional Art, William Gerdts.
