Notes

The artist has included within this composition two highly symbolic Japanese motifs.

The koinobori or 'carp banners' were flown by farmers to frighten pests away and on what was known as 'Boys Day'. The banners represent the overcoming of obstacles with strength and determination in the way that carp successfully fight their way against the river currents. The pair of Cranes is a symbol of good fortune, fidelity and longevity.

Dumoulin first exhibited at the Paris salon in 1879 and visited Japan from 1887-88. He was created an officer of the Legion d'Honneur in 1906.

A work dating from 1888 entitled 'Carp Banners in Kyoto' currently hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
