Item Overview

Description

Louis Jean Jacques Durameau (Paris 1733 - 1796 Versailles), attributed to A putto, oil on canvas, 43.5 x 50 cm, framed, (Wo) Without reserve In spite of his great significance for history painting, which was a highly appreciated genre in the 18th century, Louis Jean Jacques Durameau achieved his greatest fame for the ceiling paintings in the palace of Versailles. In 1775 he started to teach at the Ecole des Elèves Entretenus, where François Watteau was among his pupils. He also painted the ceiling fresco in the opera of Versaille, which had been commissioned from him on the occasion of the wedding of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The present work also seems to have been part of an interior decoration.
