LOU BERNSTEIN (American, 1911-2005) Washington Square, 1953 Vintage gelatin silver, 1953 Paper: 10-7/8 x 13-7/8 inches (27.6 x 35.2 cm) Image: 8-3/4 x 12 inches (22.2 x 30.5 cm) Recto: signed, titled, and dated in ink in artist's hand Verso: inscribed Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, AZ in ink in unidentified hand State: unmounted Bernstein was a charter member of the Photo League in New York and was active in the organization from 1936 until the league disbanded in the early 1950s. Bernstein taught at the Phoenix School of Design in New York and at the request of W. Eugene Smith, took over Smith's classes at Cooper Union while Smith went to Japan to photograph for Life magazine. Bernstein was known as "the photographer's photographer" by his colleagues and was active for more than sixty years. His work was included in Edward Steichen's ground-breaking "Family of Man" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955 and is found in numerous museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Jewish Museum. This photograph is 1 of 5 extant copies. One of these copies, in addition to two other Bernstein prints, were in the private collection of W. Eugene Smith. In 1978, Mr. Smith gifted his collection to the Center for Creative Photography at The University of Arizona. This image was also featured in The New York Times, Sunday Magazine Edition, by Jack Deschin, Editor of Photography, June 12, 1955.
