LOU BERNSTEIN (American, 1911-2005) Swing Puller, 1950 Vintage gelatin silver, 1950 Paper: 11 x 14 inches (27.9 x 35.6 cm) Image: 9 x 12-1/8 inches (22.9 x 30.8 cm) Recto: signed, titled, and dated in ink in artist's hand State: unmounted Cornell Capa, founder and executive director of the International Center of Photography, New York, acquired 73 photographs of Lou Bernstein's for the ICP's permanent collection in 1991. The complete collection was exhibited at ICP from February 21 through April 26, 1992. The title of the exhibition was "Lou Bernstein, Five Decades of Photography." Swing Puller was one of the 73 acquisitions. Bernstein was a charter member of the Photo League in New York and was active in the organization from 1936 until the league disbanded in the early 1950s. Bernstein taught at the Phoenix School of Design in New York and at the request of W. Eugene Smith, took over Smith's classes at Cooper Union while Smith went to Japan to photograph for Life magazine. Bernstein was known as "the photographer's photographer" by his colleagues and was active for more than sixty years. His work was included in Edward Steichen's ground-breaking "Family of Man" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955 and is found in numerous museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Jewish Museum. This photograph is 1 of 5 extant copies.
