Item Overview

Description

Lillian Tiffany (American, b. 1900)

"Ch. Vigow of Romanoff" with Louis J. Murr at Morris + Essex 1936. Signed and dated "L.Tiffany/36" l.l., titled within the composition u.r. Mixed media on illustration board, 18 3/8 x 14 1/8 in., unframed. Condition: Two tears to upper edge, toning, foxing, soiling.

N.B. Lillian Tiffany specialized in illustrating dogs. In the scene at hand, she portrays a significant moment in the world of dog shows. Amy Fernandez writing for The Canine Chronicle describes the significance as follows, "On March 11, 1936 the American Kennel Club crowned its first American-Bred dog of the year. Ironically, the honor went to a Borzoi, then known as the Russian Wolfhound, breeder/owner/handled by the French-born Louis Murr. His Romanoff Borzoi kennel in Spring Valley, New York, produced decades of winners, but none equaled the fame of Ch. Vigow of Romanoff." 1.
