Description

New York ca mid 1850s oil on canvas unsigned in original gilt and gesso frame 36" x 29.25" Versions of this portrait by McMaster reside at Wheatland, Buchanan's estate in Lancaster, Pa., as well as at the White House. This portrait was one of at least two versions purportedly taken from life during the course of three weekends in New York, and was, according to family tradition, sent to the "Empire Club" of New York. This club was a powerful Democratic organization whose purpose was to install its candidates in office. William McMaster was also known to have executed a portrait of Calhoun in 1860.
