Description

*Lieven Cruyl (circa 1640-1720) a view of rome, looking along the tiber, over the castel sant'angelo towards st.peters. Signed (faint, lower left): CRUYL. Pen and brown and black ink, and gray wash, on vellum. 155 by 214mm. Cruyl executed a number of variants of this view, both drawings and engravings (see Barbara Jatta, Lieven Cruyl e la Sua Opera Grafica, Un artisto Fiammingo nell'Italia del Seicento, Brussels 1992, figs. 29-38). In its aerial viewpoint, the present drawing is closest to one sold, Monaco, Sotheby's, 8 December 1984, lot 77 (see Jatta, op. cit., cat. 102, fig.77).
