The City Without is characteristic of Chamberlain's output, combining hyper-realism with the depiction of children's toys in domestic interiors. Employing an extreme level of precision, Chamberlain labours over his paintings and he can take up to four years to complete a single work.

Following his graduation from the Slade School of Fine Art, Chamberlain was nominated for the BP Portrait Award from the National Portrait Gallery in 1998 and was awarded the Discerning Eye first prize in 2001. He has held solo exhibitions at the Merchant Ivory Commission in New York, the Barings Bank in London and with James Hyman Gallery, London.
