Description

LEO BROE [1899-1966] A pair of pencil and charcoal portrait drawings of Rory O'Connor and Padraig Pearse, both signed and dated 1934, circa 11 x 9 ins[29 x 22 cms] and 10 x 8 ins[25 x 20 cms] respectively, the Pearse drawn from the familiar photograph, the O'Connor probably also from a photograph. Rory O'Connor was the leader of the Republican forces in the Four Courts, and was one of the four prisoners executed without trial by the Free State in December 1922 in reprisal for the shooting of Sean Hales TD. Leo Broe was a well-known monumental sculptor and artist. (2)
