Notes

Fiorella Frisoni dates the present sheet to the 1570s, noting that it can be 'placed with absolute conviction among Lelio's works' (E. Monducci et al., op. cit., p. 133). Dr. Frisoni compares the drawing to a print by Hendrick van der Borcht in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna which appears to be after a drawing very similar to the present work and which is inscribed 'Lelio da novellare in. borcht fe' (E. Monducci et al., op. cit., fig. 113b).
