Notes

Russ first visited Egypt in 1833, when he accompanied Anton Graf Prokesch von Osten (1795-1876), who contributed to the signing of a peace between the Viceroy Muhammad Ali, pasha of Egypt, and Sultan Ottoman Mahmud II in Cairo. He toured the Middle East again between 1838 and 1842, intending to publish an illustrated account of his travels. The present lot includes an unfinished (and unpublished) Guckkastenbilder, or illustrated title page, for which he is best-known.
