3 volumes, 8υo (207 x 133 mm). Engraved folding map with route outlined in color and 22 engraved plates (6 folding) (some occasional spotting). Contemporary tree calf, flat spines gilt with morocco lettering-pieces (some light wear, spines dry, with a few chips to lettering-pieces).

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Sent by The Dutch East India Company to South Africa in 1781, Le Valliant records his remarkable journey through Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bachuanaland, and the Kalahari Desert. Having studied natural history at Metz, he places great emphasis on the specimens he collected throughout his travels as is evidenced in some of the plates. (3)
