Item Overview

Description

Laurence Campbell RHA (1911-1964) A COLLECTION OF THIRTY-SEVEN ITEMS INCLUDING ARTWORK, LETTERS & CORRESPONDENCE (1937-1953)

pencil, crayon and pen on paper (35 of which unframed, one framed); one catalogue of Campbell at work on his statue for Sean Heuston

variously signed, titled and dated

33 by 30cm., 13 by 12in.

An intriguing collection of primary material which sheds light on the offers, submissions and correspondence in the development of the artistic career of Laurence Campbell. Comprises: numerous original pieces of artwork, letters/documents and catalogue the earliest pieces of artwork dating from 1930s, some executed in Stockholm and Paris. Subject matter includes life drawings, mostly female nudes, as well as designs for sculptural work which may well have been submissions/drafts for proposed monuments and religious themes. The letters and documents date from the 1950s and reference various institutions, commissions and payment. St. Louis Convent Rathmines, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, Depot Artillery Corps, McKee Barracks Kildare and the Mortuary Chapel, Naas are among the locations mentioned. The 2007 RHA Annual Exhibition catalogue, in the section, Drawing at the Academy, singled out Campbell's achievements and illustrated five drawings by the artist similar to items in this lot as well as a photograph of the Sean Heuston sculpture (See p.35-37 of 2007 RHA catalogue).
