4° (285 x 223mm). 2pp. publisher's advertisements at end. 16 plates (12 hand-coloured aquatints from sketches by Latrobe or Mr. Melville, 4 uncoloured line engravings), folding engraved map with routes marked by hand in red or blue. (Some spotting to text.) Original drab paper-covered boards, paper label to spine lettered 'latrobe Visit to South Africa (double rule) Price £2:2.', uncut (backstrip torn with loss, joints splitting, extremities bumped, small split to upper cover), 20th-century red cloth box, titled in gilt on label on upper cover. Provenance: early inscription to front pastedown. FIRST EDITION IN THE RARE ORIGINAL BOARDS. Abbey Travel I,325; Gay 3117; Mendelssohn I,p.866; Tooley 292.
