LARRTJANGA GANAMBARR (1932 - ) Sacred Goannas and Djuda Trees, Circa 1960 natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark 37.5 x 87.0 cm E800- 1200 Provenance: Dorothy Bennett Collection ,Number#25. The label verso reads in part: "the artist has depicted two goannas (djanda), a fish, and two djuda trees growing on the sandhills at Jelangbara on the Gulf of Carpentaria. This is the site at which the the Dreamtime hero, Djanggawul, landed with his two women after their epic journey from across the sea. They saw goannas basking on the sand, and made them sacred totems for the Ngeimil tribe. then they created a sacred well (circle) and made the fish swimming i it also sacred for this tribe... The heart shaped object in the painting is the hole in the sandhills to which the goannas retreat. The background pattern represents the swirls in the sand as the goannas scuttled about..."
