Item Overview

Description

Larose, Ludger (1868-1915)
Déposition du Christ (1888)

Description (FR):
Description (EN):
Oil on canvas, signed and dated on lower right L. Larose 1888 Provenance: Collège de l'Assomption One of his early works, this oil on canvas is a reproduction made by Ludger Larose while he was studying in Paris. The original painting is the Deposition of the Christ painted in 1625 in Naples by the Spanish painter Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) and it is kept in the Louvre museum. The present painting reflects therefore the influence of the chiaroscuro during the baroque era driven by Caravaggio but also the learning process of the Quebec painter at the end of the 19th century by copying the great masters. Born in 1868, Larose had first studied at the Montreal School of Arts and Crafts with the abbot Joseph Chabert. In 1887, he moved to Paris where he joined the Colarossi Academy and the School of Fine Arts. He was often visiting the Louvre museum in order to copy paintings including the present work dated “Paris 1888”. During a short stay in Montreal in 1890, he was asked by the priest Alfred-Léon Sentenne to contribute to the decoration of the chapel Notre-Dame du Sacré-Coeur in Montreal. He went back to Europe with Joseph-Charles Franchère to improve his art, then finally returned in 1894 to Montreal where he started a teaching career besides his painting one. He took part in many exhibitions with the Art Association of Montreal and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Some of his works can be seen at the Montreal museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada or the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
