Description

(American, 1835-1910) VENEZIA signed L.G. Mead and inscribed Venezia; white marble; height: 22 inches; Note: Larkin Goldsmith Mead, a Vermont native, spent the early part of the Civil War with the army of the Potomac as an artist for Harper's Weekly. He had the opportunity to live in Italy from 1862-1865 with his brother-in-law, the U.S. consulate in Venice. After a short trip back to the United States, he returned to Italy and lived in Florence. His first important work was a statue of Ethan Allen, now located at the State House in Vermont.
