LANCELOT-THÉODORE TURPIN DE CRISSÉ PARIS 1782 - 1859 A VIEW OF THE ROMAN FORUM oil on paper laid down on canvas 11 1/2 by 17 3/8 in; 29.1 by 44.2 cm.

We are grateful to Caroline Chaine for confirming this to be a work by Turpin de Crissé, on the basis of a photograph. The composition relates to a drawing by the artist in the collection of the Musée du Louvre (circa 1807-08, pen, ink, pencil and wash on paper, 462 x 640 mm.). A similar painting by the artist, depicting the right half of the present composition, was with Colnaghi, London, in 2004 (signed and dated twice:1818 and 1842, oil on canvas, 130 x 99 cm.).
