Hashi-ichi was an eccentric artist who worked in lacquer, producing a variety of wares which he designed to simulate bamboo with uncanny accuracy. He worked for Marquis Yodo and became a member of the Tokyo Art School. He was succeeded by his adopted son, Hashi-ichi II.
