Description

We are pleased to offer this Vintage Little Black Sambo print done by Thornton Utz, (1914-1999) one of the cover artists of the Saturday Evening Post.This was a 1940s advertising premium for tires. You would be awarded this litho print of Little Black Sambo with the purchase of a set of tires. The print size itself is about 8" wide and 6 1/2" tall. During the 1940s and '50s, Utz provided advertising illustrations for clients such as Coca-Cola, General Electric and Ford Motor Co. His work also graced more than 50 covers of the Saturday Evening Post. Eventually, Utz dedicated himself full time to working in the fine arts, which for him included portraiture and sculpture. International fame came with portraits of Princess Grace of Monaco and President Jimmy Carter, as well as the Carter family. Research Consulted:curtispublishing.com

Provenance

From the estate of the late Mrs. Jo Nagel, noted collector, dealer and artist. Mrs. Nagel traveled extensively both in the US and abroad. She lived in New Mexico in the 70s, 80s and 90s. While in New Mexico, Jo Nagel became a avid collector and dealer of American Folk Art, Primitives and American Antiques. A wonderful Folk Artist, she painted many Folk Art paintings for family and friends, that became popular and in demand by all who saw them.
