Acquired from the artists by the present owner in 1980

The present lot is a recreation of an item from a 1980 installation exhibited at the Ronald Feldman Gallery in New York in 1980 and entitled Onward to the Final Victory of Capitalism. The installation included a store-bought American flag modified to show the cosmos in place of the traditional stars representing the states. The flagpole leaned in a corner next to a series of Soviet-style propaganda posters about the merits of capitalism. The Future American Flag was created shortly after the exhibition by the artists as a stand-alone piece for the current owner.
