Item Overview

Description

Kakemono, ink on paper. Japan, 2nd half 18th century. SIZE IMAGE 117 x 49,7 CM, SCROLL 114 x 60,5 CM
Genki masterly used wash technique to create the impression of an atmospheric landscape showing trees and house, making us sense the air filled of mist and rain. Mountains fading in the distance with a full moon poetically shimmer through the clouds. The motif in the foreground shows a man bended forward walking under an umbrella at a shore. A fine painting offering smooth transition between the various elements. Genki studies with Maruyama Okyo in Kyoto. The first part of his name (Gen) relates to his origin from the important Minamoto-family (Gen). Signature: Genki sha-i 源琦 寫意, red seal Genki no in 原琦 之印 (seal of ...). Brocade mounting (depicting Lingzhi, a.o.), polished wooden Jikusaki. With wooden case and inscription "View of Rain, Mountains and Water" and Genki fude.
Komai Genki is regarded as one of the most skillful students of Maruyama Okyo. Among others, his artworks are displayed at the Freer Gallery, at the Metropolitan Museum and at the British Museum.
